Cox Plate 2026: what the market did, and your build

Every racing site publishes Cox Plate odds. This page does two other things: it shows what the Flemington market actually did this spring, measured from the bookmaker closing-line archive rather than remembered, and it lists what a race-day build needs working before Saturday 24 October 2026.

Saturday 24 October 2026 Flemington · 2040m · Group 1 5 days away The Everest 16 October · Caulfield Cup 16 October · Melbourne Cup 3 November

Run at Flemington in 2026, for this year only, while Moonee Valley is rebuilt. It is the first Cox Plate away from the Valley.

1. What the Flemington market did this spring, measured

20 Flemington races over 2 meetings are in the closing-line archive, from 12 September 2026 to 3 October 2026, priced by 14 served bookmakers. The closing favourite won 20% of the 20 races with a final result (4 wins) and finished in the first three in 45%, at an average closing price of $3.04.

Of 223 runners with a qualifying price path, 7% firmed by a fifth or more between their opening and closing price and 26% drifted by a quarter or more; the median runner closed within 7.7% of where it opened.

Method: for each runner, the median across served bookmakers of its closing win price divided by its opening price, where the open is the earliest archived price up to an hour before the jump, each bookmaker observed the runner at least three times over at least twenty minutes and held a closing line, at least three bookmakers qualify, and the race has a final result. The favourite is the runner with the lowest median closing price. Same rules as the weekly market report; measured 19 Oct 2026 07:32 UTC. These are bookmaker prices, not exchange prices.

The same rows are yours through /v1/racing/closing-lines for any race the archive holds, every served bookmaker's open and close per runner.

2. The endpoints a race day actually touches

In the order you will reach for them.

3. Your horizon decides when you first see the field

How far ahead your key can read the card is set by your plan, and it decides when the Cox Plate field first becomes visible to your code. The windows below assume a mid-afternoon jump; the authoritative start_time comes from /v1/racing/events once the meeting loads.

PlanAllowanceRate limitReads aheadField visible from
Free $0 3,000 30/min 24h Friday 23 October, 4pm
Hobby $9 7,500 60/min 24h Friday 23 October, 4pm
Standard $29 75,000 200/min 48h Thursday 22 October, 4pm
Plus $49 140,000 500/min 168h Saturday 17 October, 4pm

Platform $199 1,500,000 1000/min 168h Saturday 17 October, 4pm
Scale $249 5,000,000 2000/min 168h Saturday 17 October, 4pm

A free key reaches 24 hours ahead, Standard 48, Plus and above 168. Every response states your own ceiling in X-Horizon-Hours; asking past it is a 403 that names the tier which reaches further, and it costs no credit.

4. What a day of polling costs

PlanCredits/monthSustainable interval, all monthHours at a 30-second poll
Free3,000every 29m12h
Hobby7,500every 12m31h

The cheap fix is to stop polling: /v1/racing/changes returns what moved since your last read.

5. A timeline that works

  1. NowSettle the plan. The horizon is the reason, not the credits.
  2. Two days outThe field lands. /v1/racing/acceptances?date=YYYY-MM-DD carries every runner, barrier, jockey, trainer and weight before a bookmaker has framed a market. Load it, diff it daily, and expect scratchings.
  3. Day beforeFreeze. No deploys on race morning. Confirm remaining credits and read X-Horizon-Hours on a live response rather than assuming.
  4. Race dayWatch, do not poll. The change feed for movement, the board for state. Read scratchings rather than caching yesterday's field.
  5. AfterJudge it. /v1/racing/results for the settled finish, then /v1/racing/closing-lines for what the market closed at, which is the only honest benchmark for anything your model did. Then run it again on The Everest day and Caulfield Cup day and Cup day.

A free key is 3,000 credits a month and needs no card. That is enough to build and test everything above; the horizon is the part to think about before race week.
