Which bookmaker has the best racing odds?

Measured on 4,439 Australian thoroughbred, harness and greyhound races from each bookmaker's closing prices: who was best price, by how much, at what margin, and whose prices best predicted the winners.

PointsBet had the best or equal-best closing price on 40.1% of runners, the most of any bookmaker, ahead of BetRight (39.9%) and TAB (34.3%).

Amber marks the bookmaker most often best in each column; bars are scaled to that leader. Runners per range: Under $3.00 4,244 · $3.00 to $6.99 8,908 · $7.00 to $14.99 8,686 · $15.00 and over 13,288.

For every runner with closing prices from at least three bookmakers, a bookmaker scores when its price equals the highest. Equal-best counts for every bookmaker at that price, so the shares do not add to 100%. Each share is out of the runners that bookmaker priced. Price ranges use the runner's median closing price across bookmakers.

What this window shows

  • The best bookmaker depends on the price. Most often best: BetRight under $3.00 (37.2%), BetRight from $3.00 to $6.99 (36.7%), PointsBet from $7.00 to $14.99 (49.0%) and PointsBet at $15.00 and over (49.7%).
  • Longer odds are where bookmakers differ most: on runners at $15.00 and over, PointsBet priced +9.7% against the typical price on average and Sportsbet −4.1%.
  • Lowest median market percentage at the close: thoroughbred Unibet (119.2%); harness BetRight (123.6%); greyhound BetRight (122.9%).
  • On sharpness, BetGold and BoostBet measurably less. Every bookmaker was within 0.2% of the field, so the differences are small.
  • Some brands share most of their prices. Closing prices were identical to the cent for BetGold and BoostBet on 96.1% and Ladbrokes and Neds on 91.0% of runners, against at most 59.9% for any other pair, so shopping between the two brands in a pair rarely finds a better price.

Price against the typical price

Each closing price divided by the median closing price for the same runner across all compared bookmakers, minus one, averaged per bookmaker. +2.0% means the bookmaker's price was 2% longer than the typical price on average.

Market percentage at the close

The sum of 1 / price over the field, per race and bookmaker, counted only where the bookmaker priced the full field (fields of four or more). The median across races is shown; 100% would be a market with no margin, and lower is better for the punter.

Sharpness: whose prices best predicted the winners

How much probability each bookmaker's prices gave the eventual winner. In every resulted race with one winner where the bookmaker priced the full field, its margin is removed with the power method and the winner's probability is compared with the average bookmaker's in the same race (the log score). The figure is how much more or less probability the bookmaker gave winners than the field did, on average. A verdict needs the 95% interval to clear zero after a Bonferroni correction for the number of bookmakers compared; otherwise the difference is not measurable. Measured twice: on prices 60 minutes before the jump (series that began at the start of the archive's capture window) and on closing prices.

4,332 resulted races 60 minutes out and 4,299 at the close. A verdict needs the interval to clear zero at |z| ≥ 2.89; differences without one are shown uncoloured. The figures move as the window fills, so quote the window dates with any number.

Brands that share prices

Pairs of bookmakers whose closing prices were identical to the cent on at least 80% of the runners both priced, against the same measure for every other pair. Each brand keeps its own row in the tables above.

BetGold & BoostBet96.1% identical · 30,059 runners
Ladbrokes & Neds91.0% identical · 33,840 runners

Every other pair of compared bookmakers (76 pairs): median 33.8% identical, highest 59.9%.

How it's measured

Australian thoroughbred, harness and greyhound races on the Sydney racing days shown. A bookmaker is compared when it held a closing price on at least 75% of the window's races. Window: 2026-09-28 to 2026-10-18 (21 racing days, Sydney dates); it covers the last 28 days once that many have passed since 2026-09-28, the first day every compared bookmaker's closing prices were complete in the archive. A closing price is a bookmaker's last archived win price for a runner, observed within 300 seconds of the jump. Scratched runners and rows the archive flags as possible duplicates are left out, the same defaults the API applies.

Compared: BetDeluxe, BetGold, BetRight, BoostBet, Ladbrokes, Neds, Palmerbet, NextBet (formerly PlayUp), PointsBet, Sportsbet, TAB, TABtouch, Unibet. Not compared in this window: bet365 (closing prices on 54.7% of races), Betr (closing prices on 68.0% of races). Betfair is not included.
